Mural Fest 2023 Artist Reels
In anticipation for Mural Fest 2023, the annual South Salt Lake City event, I have become familiar with the attending artists and the community through engagement over social media. I increased the organization’s public engagement through interviewing eleven mural artists and by creating eleven “Get to know the artist” Instagram reels. Through this process, I captured the artist’s voices and personalities to tell a story about the South Salt Lake art community. By using Adobe Premiere and After Effects, I complied the artist’s headshots and audio recordings to create an interactive sound wave.
Phoebe Joynt, Austin Texas
Meet Phoebe Joynt (‘FEEBEE’) who is an emerging muralist based out of Austin, Texas. While in our neck of the woods, Phoebe hopes to bring her vibrancy and positivity to South Salt Lake via her multimedia pop-art influenced work.
When designing for the town of Austin, she incorporates certain historical ‘Easter eggs’ or hidden symbols such as native wildflowers, eagles, and an occasional route 66 motel sign that brings a sense of familiarity for the locals.
“I hope to share a really positive, uplifting message with the South Salt Lake community and its residents. By bringing a little of that Austin, Texas weird to South Salt Lakes’ weird, I hope to share a positive and inspiring new piece of public artwork,” says Phoebe.
Phoebe’s eclectic art style aims to engage the viewer’s with a fun almost nostalgic feel. We also think her instagram handle is kinda clever, follow her at @feebee_n_jay.
Denise Duong, Chicago Illinois
Meet Denise Duong! Denise’s artistry highlights the complexity of human emotion and captures the inherent urge to explore spirituality. Based out of Oklahoma City, OK, Denise is excited to bring her storytelling abilities to Utah’s art scene through epic illustrations.
She is inspired by everyday sounds, smells and usually her morning cup of coffee. “There is always a story hidden behind the eyes and the way it’s interpreted,” says Duong. “All those little aspects mixed into a potion of stories within a story.”
Denise loves history and the tiny moments of everyday life. She incorporates elements of people, nature and the history of their surroundings into her art to create intricate, yet engaging visuals.
Denise’s work is interpreted by the female figure. Her art becomes personal, touching base on current times and the past. She says, “My work is a deep dive into the emotional and spiritual aspects of being a human.”
